Daniela Monica Sara, born 1993, currently resides and works in Zurich. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Design from the ZHdK in 2024.
The starting point for my work are sociological observations, thoughts and feelings that deal with our society. My work is driven by the questions that drive me – the ‘why’ and ‘wherefore’. Thematically, I deal with emotions and their interaction with our social system and the way we are socialised. A thought forms the core of a concept that materialises in the course of the creative process. My approach is process-orientated, so that the final works only find their full form through interaction with the viewer. I work at the interface between design and art. From a design-oriented perspective, I research and develop themes that are transformed into art through performative and interactive approaches.
The formation of identities is a central theme that runs through my work and has a self-reflective, autobiographical dimension. I deal with processes of self-perception and critically reflecting on my own privileges and presenting these confrontations aesthetically. My personal perspective serves as a starting point to illuminate social structures, but also leaves room for individual interpretations. In this way, my personal reference becomes a catalyst, both in terms of content and form, for dealing with universal questions of belonging, power and self-determination. I consciously use design to make complex questions of identity tangible. My works are intended to raise questions and stimulate thought, whereby the choice of materials is always in harmony with the content aspects, which means that the materiality of the works varies depending on the theme.
